After Osama, who should we fear? They’re closer than you think!
Some say Al-Quada’s second in command, Ayman Al Zawahiri is the natural successor to the void caused when the Navy Seals popped a cap into Osama’s skull. Others point to rogue states like Pakistan, Iran or North Korea, all having, or close to having, nuclear weapons that could be used by terrorist networks looking to strike against the U.S. and other western nations with potentially lethal force on an unimaginable scale. Still others point to our own rotting infrastructure as perhaps the greatest threat to our nation, an infrastructure that has decayed due to irresponsible governance over the past several decades that emphasized tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of many of the things needed for a thriving economy and a civilized society, like education, transportation, healthcare and law enforcement.
And while all are threats and have the potential to impact America negatively, I would argue that what now emerges as the most dire and dangerous threat to our country is much more insidious and much more dangerous than any of those; the Tea Party and their agenda to fundamentally damage the United States of America in ways that may change the course of history forever, and will likely hurt millions of Americans for generations.
In a ridiculous appearance by Tea Party leader Reverend William Temple (in full Revolutionary War soldier costume no less), he articulated how, after helping to elect a class of incredibly incompetent and dangerous representatives dedicated to childishly stopping serious and responsible legislation at every turn, the movement now plans to pressure the remaining adults in the room to basically destroy what little remains of an already teetering economic and social framework in this country. And while claiming they are doing it to return sanity to government spending and to save the future for generations to come, anyone who has been paying attention for the last 20 years or so knows that their claims are as ridiculous as grown men dressing up like revolutionary war heroes and expecting to be taken seriously; in other words, utter nonsense that would be funny if it weren’t so damn dangerous!
The first question one wants to ask the man in the 3 cornered hat is this…where the hell were you in the eight years prior to President Obama taking office when the administration and government in charge 1) took a surplus and turned it into a deficit, 2) began wars that did less to hurt our enemies and more to empower them while trying to hide the cost from view, and 3) doubled down on their irresponsible behavior by passing huge tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and justifying them with outright lies, thus further depleting the treasury and exploding our debt? Were you not concerned about our inability to control government spending then? Did you not care about future generations at that time? What changed so dramatically that now you are consumed about deficits, unmanageable debt and a destitute future for our children, but a few short years ago, when this course was originally charted, there was deafening silence? I know we’re not allowed to even hint that it’s because the unthinkable happened and someone you never expected to become President ended up being elected, but I gotta tell ya, it sure looks that way.
But beyond that, the solutions being promoted by the supporters of the masquerade party are also just as incongruent and illogical. Somehow, every reduction in spending and every effort to slash government largesse will impact primarily those who have the least power and the least influence. Yep, it seems that the only way to save the country is by cutting education, reducing healthcare for the sick, punishing the poor, exploiting the elderly, abandoning the undernourished, further eroding our infrastructure, eliminating anything that smacks of culture or art, removing any form of consumer protection that could hurt corporate profits, and by exacting revenge on anyone the conservative upper middle class of America doesn’t like. Rich folks and corporations? Hey, don’t worry, you’re safe.
Now, one way to explain this head scratching logic (and the Reverend getting mixed up and thinking Halloween is in early May), is to point out what is really behind the Tea Party and the GOP’s policy wishes, and has been ever since corporate shill extraordinaire Rick Santelli staged his scripted rant on behalf of corporate America. Namely, a cabal of wealthy corporate interests intent on heading off any attempt to rein in their profits. That they are accomplishing their objectives by hoodwinking average Americans through fear and disinformation, like demonizing and marginalizing the President because he looks different and has a funny name (see Donald Trump), is just a happy coincidence for the GOP, who never met a politically expedient solution for controlling the electorate they didn’t like (can you say terror alerts?).
But I am beginning to think there may be something more sinister at work here. Again, consider the silence only a few years ago by the same people that are NOW in the Tea Party, when America embarked on a course that was dangerous, ill advised, and most likely to cause serious harm to our nation. Where were their voices during an Administration that…
- Was irresponsible with the economy and was helping to bankrupt the nation?
- Was incapable of bringing the most notorious terrorists to justice?
- Sacrificed thousands of American lives and the lives of millions of innocents around the world in wars that didn’t have anything to do with the people that attacked us?
- Shredded the cornerstones of our democracy such as our civil liberties by covertly monitoring and wiretapping our citizens?
- Actively suppressed freedom of speech by demonizing anyone who disagreed with them as terror sympathizers?
- Engaged in torture and made our fighting men and women criminals in the eyes of the world?
- Sought to subvert the rights of women and people with alternative lifestyles?
- Allowed thousands to perish in New Orleans, due largely to a government that was distracted by clever enemies and its own incompetence, and that was either unable or unwilling to protect the safety of its own citizens?
Yes, it was a time when by all objective measures, it looked like the bad guys were actually winning! And the stunning silence of those that were to become the Tea Party is not only curious during that period, it is an indictment. Because when the country, finally with competent leadership, re-focused on who ACTUALLY attacked us, began putting the screws to our REAL enemies, restored our DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS, and began the process of RESTORING OUR ECONOMY AND SOCIETY, well that was when the Tea Party suddenly appeared to try and stop what was being accomplished, and to try and bring back the destructive policies our enemies so thoroughly enjoyed, and happily endorsed.
So, while it may sound extreme, and may anger some, I for one would not be surprised at all if an analyst deep inside Langley, working through that treasure trove of information garnered in the take out of Bin Laden, were to come across the term ‘TEA PARTY’, referenced not as an enemy, a social gathering, or a joke, but more as an ALLY!
